William S. Roberts is a student of history in the truest sense – not someone who reads about the past, but someone who tries to live it long enough to write it honestly. He’s spent years studying the people and culture of ancient Egypt’s 18th Dynasty, consulting with leading Egyptologists, and asking the kinds of questions that don’t have tidy answers.
Hatchepsut: Female Falcon Over Egypt is his effort to give one of history’s most remarkable leaders the full-dimensional life she deserves.
A native of Riverside California, Mr. Roberts grew up on the edge of the desert. He attended and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He was commissioned an Ensign our Navy the same day and made the service his career.
In his twenty years of active duty, Mr. Roberts served over ten years of sea duty as a Surface Line Officer, primarily on Destroyers and Cruisers, specializing in engineering and Anti-Submarine warfare. He served two deployments to the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War as well as operations in the Eastern Mediterranean surrounding both the Yom Kippur War and the Greco-Turkish War on Cyprus. He also served a year at Pan Mun Jom Korea where he met daily with representatives of the People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea).
During his naval career, Mr. Roberts earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Southern California and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of San Diego, both at night.
Commencing with his retirement from the U.S. Navy in 1989 he became a member of the California Bar and practiced for the next twenty years as a litigation and trial attorney with one of the nation’s largest law firms. His practice was in the field of civil litigation defense and he has litigated hundreds of cases defending clients who were sued, particularly in the field of products liability. He retired from that profession in July 2009.
Although fully immersed in his two divergent professional careers,
Mr. Roberts has been a life-long student of history. He is particularly versed in American history and Ancient Egyptian history and is knowledgeable of most other areas of ancient history, English history and military history. He is an experienced lecturer on cruise ships and to groups and takes great joy in teaching in a variety of fields.
Mr. Roberts has been married to his wife Marianna since 1975 and has a daughter, Jenna, and a stepson Christopher, who has given them two grandchildren. He is an avid backpacker and hunter.
He and his wife now reside in Garden Valley Idaho.
